The stems of a project are the individual audio tracks that make up an entire audio mix. Stems can be mixed down to include groups of sounds, such as a drum stem or include sound effects only, like reverb or delay.

In recorded music, stems are bounced out for mixing so that each track can be easily adjusted individually. In film, stems are often created for the music, the dialogue, the background ambiences, the Foley, and the sound effects.
