‘Linear’ is a mathematical concept describing the relationship between two numbers that are related by a fixed variable. The speed of sound is linear in nature because it travels at a fixed rate.

On a graph, this would be represented by a straight line in any direction. For every increase or decrease by 1 in the x-axis, there is an equal increase or decrease in the y-axis.

Linear concepts may be used in audio when describing fades. Typically, you might apply either a linear, exponential, logarithmic or an s-curve (the equivalent of a bell curve) to fade in or fade out a sound to make it transition most naturally with its surrounding elements.
