‘Ambience’ is a word coined by sound professionals working the film industry. Stemming from the words ‘ambient’ and ‘ambiance’, this term is used to refer to background sounds that occur in a specific place. Ambience sounds typically consist of non-attention grabbing sounds and help set the audience into the location.

Ambience sound effects are often recorded in a multi-channel surround sound format to fill in the entire theater or listening space.
