An eight channel surround sound system that shares the same front speakers as a 5.1 set up, but splits the surround signal from the rear signal. These are the speakers in a 7.1 setup: Front Left (L), Center (C), Front Right (R), Left Surround (LS), Left Rear (SBR), Right Surround (RS), Right Rear (RBR), Low Frequency Emitter (LFE) (the point one in “7.1”).

It is used primarily in film and video game sound mixing where a more immersive sound mix offers a deeper experience for the audience. Dialogue is predominantly placed in the Center channel while ambiences (background sounds) and music are panned to fill the surround speaker. The LFE is used for accentuating music or stingers and big hits.
