“5.1” refers to a six channel surround sound system with 5 full bandwidth speakers: Front Left (L), Center (C), Front Right (R), Left Surround (Ls), Right Surround (Rs), and one Low Frequency Emitter (LFE) (the point one in “5.1”).

It is used primarily in film and video game sound mixing to provide an immersive experience for the audience. Dialogue is predominantly placed in the Center channel while ambiences (background sounds) and music are panned slightly towards the Left and Right Surrounds. The LFE is used for accentuating music or stingers and big hits.
